Labour leader Ed Miliband said there have been “broken promises” in Enfield.

The leader of the opposition visited mental health users group The Lancaster Centre in Lancaster Road today as he spoke with to discuss Labour’s policy on mental health.

Mr Miliband also showed his support for parliamentary candidate Joan Ryan, who lost the Enfield seat North to Conservative MP Nick de Bois in 2010 by 1,692 votes.

Speaking to the Enfield Independent, Mr Miliband slammed David Cameron’s visit to Chase Farm Hospital seven years ago, at which the Tory leader promised to save the accident and emergency and maternity wards.

The units closed in December 2013.

He said: “We want to hold David Cameron to account for his broken promises in Enfield on Chase Farm Hospital, everyone knows the promise he made, it was notorious nationally, that the accident & emergency and maternity ward would not close and it is a broken promise.”

Mr Miliband also spoke about mental health services, saying: “I think we can do a lot more when it comes to mental health services and it is a big issue in Enfield especially when it comes to children’s mental health.

However, when asked about a possible reopening of the A&E at the hospital, in The Ridgeway, the Labour leader would not be drawn into making any promises.

He said: “Joan [Ryan] is campaigning for something important at Chase Farm for longer opening hours at the urgent care centre and having a doctor always present, which I think is really important.

“I am not going to make false promises like David Cameron did but what I always say is let’s make promises we can keep.

“It is difficult when the decisions have been made, it is very difficult for us to make promises now to reverse that, but we will look at the situation we inherit.”

In his support for Ms Ryan, the Labour leader said: “I think from my time in the Commons since 2005 I remember asking people who are the great of local parliament members and Joan’s name stood out.

“The way in which everybody knows somebody who was helped by Joan and I think that shows how well she did as MP.”
