A total of 14 people have been prosecuted in the first year of a spitting ban.

Enfield Council introduced a borough-wide ban on December 9, 2013, giving council staff powers to fine people up to £500 if they are caught spitting anti-socially in public places.

There could be a London-wide ban, with a fine of £80 if it is passed by the the transport and environment committee of London Councils this afternoon.

This would mean on the spot fines for people caught spitting, as opposed to the current by-law, under which people face a court.

Councillor Chris Bond, cabinet member for environment, told the Enfield Independent that the by-law had been a success.

He said: “I think the by-law has been worth it. We always said that this was not about the figures but trying to stop people committing this anti-social behaviour act and we have seen the benefits.

“This all came from calls by the Enfield people to ban this act and we are happy to be leading the way on this ban.”

Cllr Bond also welcomed the proposed London-wide £80 fine on people caught spitting, which would be cut to £50 if paid within 14 days.
