A woman received “disgusting” threats on a social networking site the night she was found hanging, an inquest heard today.

Aimee Kearney, of Wheatley Gardens, Edmonton, was found unconscious in Hilly Fields Park, Enfield, on May 11 this year.

The 21-year-old had called an ambulance herself using her mobile phone and was taken to hospital, where she died two days later.

Barnet Coroners Court heard today how she discovered her boyfriend had been cheating on her in the weeks leading up to her death.

According to her parents, Lisa and Dean Kearney, she received threatening messages from a girl on social networking site Facebook on the day she died.

But this was never investigated and police did not take any statements from her parents or the girl who made the threats.

Mrs Kearney said: “Her Facebook status from that night said she was in her room, eating chocolate and watching films and that she was so happy.

“But if you scroll to her iPod you’ll see she had received the most disgusting threatening messages.

“That wasn’t looked into further. Mentally she may have been pushed to do this.

“If I beat someone physically, I get arrested. Why isn’t it the same for verbal threats?”

Mr Kearney added: “She was scared for her life – that’s verbal abuse.”

Her parents also questioned whether Aimee had been alone on the night she was found hanging and told the court they believe other people were involved.

However, PC Neil Brooks, who attended the scene on May 11, said there was no evidence to suggest this.

Coroner Andrew Walker told the court: “If someone does something that causes someone to take their own life, it isn’t a criminal offence.

“She suffered a severe and terrific emotional blow the night her life came to an end. It paints a very sad picture indeed.”

The inquest was adjourned to allow the police time to take further statements.
