More than 1,000 counterfeit mobile phone covers have been seized.

Trading standard officers visited a number of shops across the borough, seizing unsafe chargers discovered they were being supplied by a wholesaler in Edmonton.

Officers from Enfield Borough Council raided the company’s headquarters and seized 1,133 phone covers on suspicion they were counterfeit and 111 travel adaptors.

The company has been wound up but a number of people associated with the company are now under investigation.

Enfield Council’s cabinet member for environment and community safety, Councillor Chris Bond, said: “Mobile phone accessories are often expensive and young people will always look for a bargain, especially where their mobile phones are concerned.

“Cheap mobile phone chargers are a known fire risk and it is utterly unacceptable for traders to be distributing potentially lethal chargers and endangering the lives of residents.

"I’d urge people to check any electrical equipment they buy meets the required European Union standards to ensure that they are not risking their lives by using some dodgy counterfeit gear.

“Enfield Council will continue to take steps to protect the public from potential harm at the hands of disreputable traders who are keen to make a quick buck.”
