The first council homes to be built for 30 years have moved one step closer to completion.

Enfield Borough Council has struck a deal with Kier Property to develop and build council homes on seven small sites across the borough.

The new development of 94 homes comprises 37 affordable homes (20 social for rent and 17 for shared ownership) and 57 private rented homes.

The land, which has now been cleared, is being prepared for a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes, all within three miles of the town centre.

Councillor Ahmet Oykener, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for housing and estate regeneration, said: “This approach is helping us to deal with an urgent need for quality housing for local people. The appointment of Kier Property as our chosen development partner to complete the small housing sites project ensures that we produce good council-owned property for the families that need it.”

Phillippa Prongue, director at Kier Project Investment, said: “We are delighted to be working with Enfield Council to deliver improved housing in the area.

"This is a highly innovative risk-sharing partnership agreement between the Council and Kier Property to finance and build new housing, and we expect to see similarly bold initiatives from other local authorities as they seek to follow Enfield’s lead in addressing the shortage of housing.”

The first sites will start to be built in December 2014.

The small sites include:

  • 9 to 85 Parsonage Lane
  • 22 to 68 Forty Hill
  • 119 to 135 Lavender Hill
  • 50 to 60 St Georges Road
  • 41 to 63 Tudor Crescent
  • 1 to 18 Jasper Close
  • Garages to rear of 131-161 Holtwhites Hill
