A woman who was forced to sleep on her sofa for almost two years due to a leaky ceiling is struggling to readjust to the comfort of her own bedroom.

Sarah Narimembe, of Hadrians Ride, Enfield, spent 18 months with a fibreglass ceiling after a leak – but it has finally been fixed by Enfield Homes.

Squirrels even took shelter in the makeshift roof, leaving a “foul stench” in her room after one died – but still nothing was done.

After speaking to the Enfield Independent in September, her room has finally been repaired with new scaffolding.

However, despite being able to finally sleep in her own bed , the 50-year-old says she is struggling to recover from the stress.

She said: "I am far from being happy. Yes, the ceiling is fixed, but I am still so upset with how I was treated. I was not taken seriously and my complaints were ignored for such a long time that I often think I still have a broken ceiling.

"Even though I am back in the comfort of my bedroom, whenever I hear rain I get scared thinking that I have forgotten to put a bucket under the leak, only to remember that it is fixed already."

Ms Narimembe, who feared for her health during the leak, was determined to get the housing agency to take action.

She said: "They kept promising that it would get sorted, but it never was. I couldn't even sleep because I was so scared. I was always on the alert that the ceiling could just fall down at any moment."

"I ended up getting very ill and depressed by it all and am still in the process of recovering from the stress I was made to endure."

The Enfield Independent is awaiting comment from Enfield Homes.
