A green-fingered councillor is calling on Enfield to get behind a borough-wide scheme on World Food Day.

Cllr Alan Sitkin, Enfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for economic development, sampled produce from Forty Hall Farm to celebrate the worldwide event.

The councillor also supported the Enfield Veg Company, which helps provide locally grown organic produce to shops and homes via the ‘veg box’ scheme.

The market garden and Enfield Veg Co are part of Garden Enfield, a borough-wide project seeking to promote training and employment within horticulture and food production in Enfield.

Cllr Sitkin heaped praise on the scheme, which is funded by the Greater London Authority.

He said: “The Enfield Veg Co is the most amazing scheme and a real embodiment of World Food Day.

“Local people work on the farm, many of them trainees, who learn vital skills in horticulture and animal management. The farm produces top quality, delicious organic vegetables and fruit which are then sold on to local shops and straight to residents via the weekly ‘veg box’ delivery scheme.

“This is not only great news for the environment, promoting sustainable farming methods but fantastic for the customer who receives affordable, delicious, locally grown food, reducing food miles, pesticide use and waste.

“Why not celebrate World Food Day by finding out more?”
