A group that helps to train foster carers and helps young children in care has won a prize.

Known as KRATOS, the group of five to 25-year-olds, has scooped the Diana Award for campaigning in the local community.

The award was set up in memory of the late Princess of Wales, with prizes specifically for young people.

Seventeen-year-old George Frith, from KRATOS, said, “We have made a DVD for children in foster care informing them of their rights, entitlements and the services available to them and we have successfully launched Junior KRATOS.

“Our group is getting stronger and we feel able to offer our ideas with confidence to the council, knowing that we will be heard. We are very excited about this award.”

Ray Lewis, the youth mentor and senior adviser to Mayor of London Boris Johnson, presented them with certificates on Friday, October 10, at the Barclay’s Bank headquarters in Canary Wharf.

He said: “It is inspiring to see the positive impact that these young people have made on foster care in Enfield.  Not only are they gaining vital life skills but they are also using their knowledge to mentor and support other children in the same situation, ensuring that their good work continues when they themselves have left care.

"KRATOS is a great example of how young people and those who look after them can work together to make services better and I’d encourage others in the capital thinking of doing the same to take a close look at their work.”

Councillor Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for education, children’s services and protection, said: “We are keen to encourage young people to take an active part in our decision making and to give us their views.

“KRATOS is an exceptional group of young people. They take a leading role in the training of social workers and foster carers and help younger children to raise concerns and make suggestions about their care. And the council listens to them. This award is thoroughly well-deserved and we are delighted that they have been recognised.”

Tessy Ojo, executive director of the Diana Award, said: “The Diana Award is proud to recognise Enfield’s young campaigners who have the confidence and courage to stand up for what they believe.”
