A church held a soup lunch and car wash to raise money for people going hungry around the world.

The Church of Christ the King, in Bramely Road, Oakwood, organised a simple meal of soup and bread to raise money for Catholic aid agency CAFOD’s Harvest Fast Day appeal.

Parishioner Patricia Margrove said:“The three soups on offer were home-made and delicious – carrot and coriander, tomato and basil, and spicy lentil. Everyone enjoyed the event, which proved to be a companionable and satisfying way to raise money for CAFOD’s work overseas.”

Jon Stricklin-Coutinho, CAFOD manager in North London, said: “This Harvest, CAFOD is asking people to make a place at their table so that everyone has enough to eat. We produce enough food every year, yet 870 million people are going hungry because of food being wasted or more extreme weather making it harder to grow food in many countries.

“The money raised by the Church of Christ the King’s efforts enable CAFOD to help families in places from Nicaragua in South America to Bangladesh in Asia to produce food and make a living.”
