A teenager has been arrested after he was filmed dunking a puppy into a bucket of ice water.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named, was arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

There was outrage on social media after the teenager was filmed in Enfield plunging a puppy into freezing water as part of the ice bucket challenge.

The challenge - in which people had a bucket of freezing water poured over them - had been taken up millions across the globe, including celebrities, to raise awareness for US charity the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association, which is trying to find a cure for motor neurone disease.

The boy was filmed as he performed the stunt and nominated “all the others dogs here and all the cats as well, yeah.”

Protesters started an online petition to bring the boy to justice, collecting more than 2,800 signatures.

The 16-year-old was arrested by police on Wednesday, September 3, at an address in Oaklands Avenue, Edmonton.

He has been subsequently bailed to attend Edmonton Police Station in late October.

As a result of the dunking incident, the puppy has been seized and is now in the care of a dog welfare charity.

Officers from Enfield and the RSPCA are continuing to investigate the incident.
