A cyclist is planning on riding through six countries in six days for an inspirational girl.

Keith Balenger, of Enfield, was captivated by the story of Nikki Christou, of Station Road, in Winchmore Hill.

She suffers arterio-venous malformation (AVM) which causes an abnormal connection between arteries and veins and can lead to serious bleeding around the face.

The ten-year-old created her own charity at the age of seven called Butterfly AVM and has so far raised 100,000 into research of the rare disease.

Mr Balenger, Nikki’s learning support assistant at her school for the past three years, is now inspired by her work and is aiming to raise money for her cause.

He said: “This ordeal has had a massive effect on family life and simple things like a family holiday have not been possible.

“Nikki has shown bravery, courage and determination beyond anything that might be expected of a child of her age.

“Her condition has prompted to her to think of other people in similar situations, inspiring her to help in some way.”

The teacher said it was Nikki's selfless attitude that prompted him to take action.

He said: “Nikki has stood up in public and talked about her condition in school and at fund-raising events.  She speaks eloquently and with maturity beyond her years.

Her story has touched us all and I can’t wait to raise money for such a worthy cause.”

Nikki picked up the the WellChild award for bravery in 2013 by Prince Harry and also won the Diana Award for inspiring the lives of others.

Mr Balenger is aiming to raise £2,000 for the cause and has so far raised £940.
