Dozens of book lovers turned out to a charity book sale in Winchmore Hill.

The fifth annual Books for Amnesty and Winchmore Hill Quakers book sale took place at the Winchmore Hill Friends Meeting House in Church Hill where thousands of second-hand books were on offer at bargain prices.

Proceeds from the sale will be divided equally between Amnesty’s campaign for human rights and Winchmore Hill Quakers.

Organisers were “very pleased” with yesterday’s turn-out and are confident they beat last year’s total. They hope to be able to donate £1,000 to each cause.

Stephen Cox, spokesman for the Quakers group, said: “It was a great success. The event keeps on going from strength to strength every year.

“We had a lot of really good books on offer from 1940s arts books to the latest chick lit, and thrillers – most tastes were accounted for.

“We’re really grateful to the local people who turn up each year, and for giving us such generous donations.”
