Two councillors have been shortlisted for awards for their dedication to their community.

Enfield borough councillor Rohini Simbodyal, who represents Jubilee ward, is battling it out to win in the young councillor category of the Councillor Achievement Awards, run by the Government Information Unit.

At 25, she is the youngest councillor in Enfield, and has been nominated for her work in setting up a new referral system which identifies children with behavioural problems and low attainment levels so they can get early support.

Councillor Christine Hamilton, who leads Enfield Lock, has been nominated by chief superintendent Jane Johnson for her work with the police to cut crime.

Councillor Achilleas Georgiou, deputy council leader, said “Both councillors work extremely hard in their wards, and their wider portfolios, to serve local people in what are fast becoming incredibly tough economic times.

“Both deal with key issues such as crime, health, young people in difficulty and all these areas are made worse when a borough suffers deprivation as parts of Enfield do."

The winners will be announced on February 25.
