Edmonton MP Andy Love says compulsory job scheme would benefit borough
2:00pm Sunday 6th January 2013 in News By Hermione Wright
Edmonton MP Andy Love has welcomed proposals to introduce a compulsory job scheme to help people find work.
The Labour Party on Friday put forward plans that would mean people who have been out of work for two years would be given a minimum-wage job for six months.
The Labour MP hopes the Jobs Guarantee, if passed, would help the 490 people in Edmonton who have claimed Jobseekers’ Allowance for two years or more.
He said: “The Government’s work programme has proved to be worse than doing nothing and their welfare revolution is in tatters.
"We need a scheme that will get people back into work, get the economy moving and bring the welfare bill down at the same time.
“Tackling long-term unemployment must be a top priority.”
