North Middlesex Hospital 'absolutely delighted' to be MRSA free for a year

A health boss at North Middlesex Hospital is “absolutely delighted” the hospital has been free of the MRSA superbug for one year.
 

Although three patients contracted MRSA in the last financial year - between April 2011 and April 2012, no cases of the infectious bacteria have been confirmed at the hospital in Sterling Way, Edmonton, since July 11, 2011.

Chief executive at the hospital, Clare Panniker, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have reached this milestone and thank our dedicated staff for making this a reality for our patients.

“Our priority as a hospital is to provide each patient with high quality care, that is safe and gets them better and back to the comfort of their home as quickly as possible.”
 

Ian Hosein, director of infection prevention and control, said: “Having no cases of hospital acquired MRSA bacteraemia proves quite emphatically that the care we provide is safe – often those that contract an infection while in a hospital are already quite poorly and so we want to do everything we can to prevent any such complications from happening.”

The hospital, which is run by the North Middlesex University NHS Trust, has set a target of no more than three cases of MRSA by the end od the financial year between 2012 and 2013.
