Enfield toddlers are among the most obese in the country, according to an NHS study.

Figures released by the National Obesity Observatory revealed that four and five year olds in Enfield have the joint-highest level of obesity in the country, with 14.6 per cent classed as obese and 28.4 per cent either overweight or obese.

And among ten and 11 year olds, the borough does not come out much better, with 25.2 per cent classed as obese – the sixth-highest in the UK.

Edmonton MP Andy Love encouraged parents to spend more time being active with their children and eating five fruit or vegetables a day.

He said: “There is no denying that we are facing an uphill struggle when it comes to tackling obesity, but it is still extremely saddening to learn that such a large proportion of children of such a young age in our area are already classified as either overweight or obese.

“There is no quick fix, but if families work together and approach healthy living as a long-term sustainable goal – through improving food choices and being more active – then reducing Enfield’s obesity levels amongst children is achievable.”
