A dedicated volunteer who has spent 40 years teaching youngsters to ice skate met the Duchess of Cornwall as part of an awards scheme.

Diamond Champion nominee Alice Hanrahan, 78, of Enfield, met the Duchess at Queensway Ice Rink in Bayswater and showed off the skills of two of her trainees in front of her on Thursday.

Curtis Elton, eight, and Sophia Elton, seven, of Whetstone performed as part of the Diamond Champion project, which aims to find people who are over 60 years old and volunteer to make a difference to an individual or their community.

Mrs Hanrahan said: “It was such an honour to meet the Duchess of Cornwall. I’m really thrilled to have been nominated as a Diamond Champion.

“Ice skating relies on people giving up their time to help teach young people. It is so rewarding for me to see young people who have a passion for skating, develop their skills and to flourish.”
