Only five Enfield bus routes running due to driver strike

Drivers at the picket line at Wood Green Bus Station.
Most bus routes in Enfield are not running because of a strike by drivers over an Olympic bonus.
According to Transport for London, the only routes expected to be running normal services in the borough are the 191, 231, W8, W9 and W10 because of the 24-hour walkout by thousands of members of the Unite union in pursuit of a £500 payment for working during the Games.
Bus passengers were urged by TfL to walk or cycle if possible or switch to other forms of transport.
The action went ahead even though three companies - Arriva, Metroline and London General - were granted an injunction in the High Court on Thursday by Mr Justice Supperstone preventing Unite members they employ from going on strike.
Hopes had been raised that the strike could be averted after London mayor Boris Johnson announced that £8.3 million was available for bus companies to pay a bonus, but talks at the conciliation service Acas ended without agreement.
Mr Johnson said: “I am saddened, disappointed and enormously frustrated that despite brokering £8.3 million of funding, union leaders and the private bus companies have failed to reach agreement, and as a result it looks likely that Londoners will face unnecessary and needless disruption.”
Transport commissioner Peter Hendy said: “It is now clear that the leadership of Unite were intent on a strike all along.
“They have pursued this unnecessary course of action despite an extra £8.3 million being brokered by the mayor that would allow every bus driver in London in a garage where one or more routes were affected by the 2012 Games to gain, over the 29 days of the competitions, about £500.”
Unite London regional secretary Peter Kavanagh said: “Bus workers across the vast majority of London's bus network will be on strike. This comes despite an injunction which was given without any proper explanation.
“It begs the question of whether the court has come under any external pressure in making the ruling.
“Granting an injunction in the face of a massive vote for strike action is an affront to democracy. We are fast becoming a country where justice rules in favour of big business and tramples on the rights of ordinary working men and women.
“We will appeal this anti-democratic decision. It will only serve to deepen the resolve of London bus workers.
"The failure by the bus companies to negotiate seriously and their desire to run to the courts will only heighten tensions. The decision by these three bus companies runs contrary to the mayor's call to pay London bus workers an Olympic bonus.”

Yes, London is going to be busier...but are the waiters, waitresses, street cleaners, shop assistants, hotel and catering staff going to be paid extra? I doubt it very much.

This repeats the inaccurate information provided at 17:30 on BBC Radio 4 on Thursday. The injunction was granted to Arriva, Herts and Essex - not Arriva London - and only to the Go-Ahead Division of London General - not other subsidiaries.
Hence Bus Routes 217+263 +N91 Metroline; 231+299, Go Ahead, also operated. As did bus route 298 Sullivan Buses only contract for London Buses

why should they be abused ? you " passengers" should have a little more respect, they stick to routes, and get you where you need to go.
As for the stupid comment about staff wages....really ?? do you know how much it costs to repair a bus ? to get rid of the graffiti ? - due to passengers... cleaning the buses, running them, the big bosses get the most and do nothing.
so why is it ok for the tube / train drivers to get a bonus ? where there is over £15m been made available, why should the ticket office staff for trains / tube get a bonus?
Other companies are getting a bonus for working extra ! so please dont comment on things you dont know about. Just because they dont make the news doesnt mean they are not.
just because bus drivers aks for a bonus dont hate on them, they do a hard job, shift hours, take the abuse from passengers. they just want £500 which when you work it out take off the tax they are going to get more in the region of £300 - so why should the tax man get a bonus on all of that ? will you start on them now. If other people dont have guts to ask for a bonus then more fool them right ?
How much extra do you think the bus companies are going to make during all this?? oh yes a pretty big amount ! so why shouldnt the drivers get some of that?????
When there is snow you blame the driver, no driver including my partner would ever put their passengers at risk with the snow and ice, but passengers dont see the problem... would you drive a bus full of passengers through the snow ?? or would safety come to mind ??
if they were reasonable comments then okay ! but there not, its not due to bus drivers wages that the fares are high its greed from higher up !
Get facts correct before hating.

They are the reason ticket prices are high in the first place - the highest cost is staff costs!
Sack the lot of these unpatriot lowlife and offer the jobs to people who care about doing a good job.
