A six-day public hearing to address the North London Waste Plan will begin tomorrow.

The meeting, which starts at 10am in Camden Town Hall, will give people a chance to have their say about the viability of building a waste facility in Pinkham Way - which is part of the waste plan.

Campaigners are fighting to get the plans quashed as they believe the plant, which would deal with approximately 300,000 tonnes of waste each year, would affect air quality for people living in north London.

They also are concerned that fleets of waste trucks would bring heavy traffic to the already busy A406 North Circular Road.

However, Councillor Clyde Loakes, chair of the North London Waste Authority (NLWP), which is heading the development, said: “The simple fact is that we have to find additional sites for new, modern waste management facilities within the north London boundaries - and Pinkham Way is the most suitable site in our area.

“We understand that local people will have concerns about the impact of the facilities proposed for Pinkham Way, and I can assure residents that all these issues and concerns will be addressed as part of the design of the facilities and in the planning process.”

If plans are waived through, Pinkham Way would deal with waste from seven boroughs across north London - Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey, Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest.

Pinkham Way is sought by the North London Waste Authority for its central location, close to the boundaries of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey.

It also has convenient road access from the A406 and is large enough to fit the development.

Cllr Clyde Loakes added: “We very much hope that the North London Waste Plan, including Pinkham Way, will be approved by the Inspector – this will enable us to move forward with our proposals for sustainable waste solutions for north London, which will benefit all our residents.

"This is not least because by building alternative processing facilities locally, rather than using more remote landfill sites, we will be able to help keep council tax down and reduce the impact of current and future landfill tax rises on public services.”

The next hearings will take place on Wednesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 14 in Camden Town Hall in Judd Street at 10am.

The next public hearings will go ahead in Hamilton House, Mabledon Place in Holborn at 10am on Tuesday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 20.

The final meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 21 at 10am in Camden Town Hall.
