A former Enfield MP made persistent attempts to remove information about the expenses scandal from her Wikipedia page.

According to research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, at least ten attempts were made to remove information from former Enfield North MP Joan Ryan’s page on the encyclopaedia site about the expenses scandal from computers inside Parliament.

A further 20 attempts to edit information were made from the Enfield constituency Labour politician Ms Ryan represented until 2010, when she lost her seat to Conservative Nick de Bois.

She was asked to repay nearly £5,000 of mortgage interest claims in 2010 after an audit of MPs’ expenses found she had over-claimed.

Wikipedia keeps a comprehensive log of every change made to any page in on the site, and Ms Ryan’s page now has no mentions of the expenses scandal.

Ms Ryan told the Bureau of Investigative Journalism: “I’ve altered it whenever there’s misleading or untruthful information been placed on it.”
