Tesco has opened up a huge £30 million online shopping warehouse in Enfield as it looks to take command of the lucrative web-based market.

The supermarket giant launched its fourth London "virtual store" in Hertford Road earlier this month as it looks to grab a 50 per cent share of supermarket online sales.

Seven hundred staff have been employed at the 115,000 square foot "dot com" store, which looks much like a normal supermarket but is staffed by personal shoppers packing orders which customers have placed online.

It is thought the new centre will help the chain gain a majority share of the market ahead of its competitors including Ocado and Sainsbury’s.
