A SOUTHGATE woman who stood against the Prime Minister at the last election has been chosen as the Liberal Democrat GLA candidate for Enfield and Haringey.

Party activist Dawn Barnes has entered the race for the London Assembly seat currently held by Labour's Joanne McCartney, and will contest the election next May.

She is described as a “key campaigner” for £54 million of funding for empty homes along the A406 North Circular Road in New Southgate, and was part of local Lib Dem efforts in the doomed electoral reform referendum campaign.

She said: “I’ve been active in Enfield and Haringey with grassroots organisations on issues such as the empty homes around the North Circular, the YES to fairer votes campaign and in saying no to the Pinkham Way waste plant.

“I’d be delighted to work for local people as an elected representative, as I'd have more opportunity to make views heard.”

Miss Barnes, who lives in Southgate, stood against Mr Cameron in the 2010 General Election in Witney, but did not make any gains on the Prime Minister's majority.

David Peters, chairman of the Enfield Lib Dems, said: "Dawn is an active local campaigner. She believes in fairness and listens to people's views so she can best help them find a way forward.

“She would make an excellent GLA representative for Enfield."
