A RARE speedway motorcylcle from the 1930s is on display at Bruce Castle Museum.

The Victor Martin bike was built in Tottenham in 1937 and powered by a JAP engine.

JAP takes its name from John Alfred Prestwich (1874 – 1952) was a brilliant engineer who was the driving force behind J A Prestwich (JAP) Industries famed for the precision of the engines for cars and aeroplanes.

Aged 21, Prestwich opened his first factory in 1985 at 1a, Lansdowne Road, where a plaque has since been erected in his honour.

The vintage bike was donated by Bill Rust in 2006 as part of Bruce Castle's centenary celebrations after spending thousands to have it restored.

Bill is a long-term volunteer at the museum.

It is going on show for the first time following a generous donation by Pat Stead, of Environmental Business Products, who covered the cost of building a plinth and display cabinet for the bike.
