AN Enfield councillor was arrested and questioned by police over alleged possession of counterfeit goods, it has emerged.

Councillor Ali Bakir was taken in for questioning by detectives on November 3 from the Broadway International Food Centre he owns in West Ealing.

The 42-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of goods with false trademarks for sale or hire. He was released on police bail and is due to report back to officers on December 23.

Cllr Bakir, a Labour member, represents Haselbury ward and sits on the board of Enfield Homes as a council nominee.

He currently sits on four committees including the housing scrutiny panel and the planning committee, and is also a council appointee to Community Business Enfield.

The council said Cllr Bakir has not been suspended from the council and is not the subject of any internal investigation.
