A MOSAIC made by primary school children commemorating a music hall star of yesteryear was unveiled on Tuesday.

The mosaic adorns the entrance to the Market Square, in Edmonton Shopping Centre, and dedicated to Edmonton music hall star Marie Lloyd who performed in a music hall near the site in 1922.

Year 6 pupils from St Edmunds RC primary school made the mosaic with the help of community arts project Art Start, which was unveiled by Edmonton MP Andy Love.

The project was funded with Heritage Lottery grant of £38,000 designed to commemorate Enfield’s lost cinemas, theatres and music halls.

The artwork is a depiction of the Empire Music Hall which became the Granada Cinema before the building was demolished in 1970.

Marie Lloyd, who is depicted in the piece, gave the Empire its fame by giving her final performance there.

Debbie Dean, ArtStart Project Spokesperson, said: “The project has gone very well. The project team, schools and The Heritage Lottery Fund have put in a huge amount of work and that is clear in the quality of the mosaics that have been created. The children’s curiosity in their local heritage has really been excited and they have had fun at the same time. The unveiling today was the icing on the cake for everyone involved.”
