Enfield brass band named one of the best in the land

ENFIELD Brass Band marched their way to victory in a prestigious national competition on Friday.

The 100-year-old band won two prizes in the Whit Friday March contests in Saddleworth, Lancashire, made famous in the 1996 film Brassed Off, starring Ewan McGregor.

The Whit Marches — the FA Cup of brass band competitions — allow any brass band to compete for prizes against the best brass bands in the land.

Villages in the area put up prizes and bands from all over the country perform.

The band scooped first prize in their category in the village of Delph — beating 79 competitors — and second at Denshaw.

Band secretary Dave Barlow said: “This is a fantastic moment for the band, totally unexpected, but testimony to the commitment of our players and our conductor John Morahan.

“These are hugely exciting times for the Enfield Brass Band, but we still need to keep attract new members, especially young people and tuba players.

“It would be superb if we could attract enough youngsters to begin a training or development band.”
