THE GREEN party are ‘upbeat’ after their best showing in Enfield history despite not winning any seats.

Laura Davenport, Bowes Ward candidate, who won 968 votes, said though the party fell behind Labour and the Tories, the 2,134 votes won in this ward marks a dramatic increase on 2002 when they clinched just a few hundred votes.

This year, for the first time in Enfield’s history, the party fielded Green candidates in all 21 wards - though none were successful.

And nationally the first ever Green MP, Caroline Lucas, leader of the Green Party and MEP, has been elected to Parliament.

Ms Davenport, who has campaigned for improvements to the A406 as a member of the Bowes Telford Community Action Group, said: “We got good feedback on the doorstep.

"We talked a lot about consultation, actually listening to what people are saying and acting on it, something the council have not been good at in the past.

"We still want a community centre here and we’re campaigning for grants for cavity wall insulation, and we will continue to lobby for these things.

"One of the things the Labour group promised was a community chest of £100,000 for each ward. I am looking forward to discussing what we can spend our £100,000 on.

“I think people are more aware of the environment and when they look at what the political parties are offering they see that the Green Party is consistent and doesn’t go off the boil.”
