Dog fouling on the rise in Enfield

DOG fouling is a growing problem in Enfield, according to recent figures.

The number of fines issued to owners for failing to clear up dog mess in the borough increased from 348 to 469 between 2008 and 2009.

In Palmers Green, where several residents have complained about the problem, fines rose from 21 to 31.

Enfield councillor Terry Neville, cabinet member for environment, voiced concern about the problem.

He said: "Our litter wardens and enviro crime team have powers to issue on-the-spot fines to any dog owner they see allowing their pet to foul the streets.

"Most dog owners are responsible and when walking their dogs ensure they carry poop scoops. This is something we want to promote.

"Our streets are important to our environment and we have a right to see that they are kept clean.

"The minority of irresponsible owners may well find themselves in receipt of an £80 fine."

To help prevent the problem, the council's environmental crime team is developing a pilot project during March that will look at dog fouling in "hotspots".

It will provide information and advice to residents and dog owners, and monitor the hotspots at the times dogs are more likely to be walked.

Specially nominated "litter wardens" will also be authorised to deal with any dog fouling they see and issue fines.
