Residents invited to air views on public services

Strategies to improve health, housing and police will be discussed at a public conference next Monday.

Residents are invited to attend "Tackling Inequality in Enfield - Building on our Achievements" at Highlands School, in Worlds End Lane, from 9.30am to 4pm, on February 15.

It was organised by Enfield Council, in partnership with health, police and other public services.

The day will include workshops that address the quality of services from the local authority, hospitals, doctors' surgeries, the police and Enfield Homes, which looks after housing on behalf of the council.

To attend this event contact equalities officer Martin Garnar on 0208 379 3113, or email martin.garnar@enfield.gov.uk.

It's unfortunate that as a council tax payer who has no choice but to work outside the borough in order to earn a sufficient salary to afford to live here my wonderful elected authority has decided to make this event exclusive, (not inclusive as advertised).

By holding it on a Monday during working hours in remote, (i.e. logisticaly distant from rail or underground services) is hardly a credible invitation to Enfield residents working outside the borough, or indeed in less local parts of the Worlds End School area.

I'm sure that many of the major contributors to the Enfield coffers too will feel slightly bemused by the choice and location of this meeting especially as it's slogan is: "Tackling Inequality in Enfield - Building on our Achievements". (I'm already starting to feel inequal already).

"Come on Enfield"; if you really intend to discuss this issue in a truly open environment please offer a more realistic event.

I'd like to thank Mr Woodhall for his comments. In trying to be inclusive, we asked representatives of all the voluntary organisations in Enfield where they would like the conference to be held. Disabled people in the commuity feel that Highlands School is the most disability-friendly venue in Enfield, so we happily agreed to use this, and are also supplying transport to those who need it. Whatever time of day or evening, we would be possibly inhibiting certain groups of people from attending, but over 100 people have put their names down so far, so quite a few people are happy with our arrangements. If you have any particular views or comments on how the public agencies in the borough can improve their services to all residents, we are keen to hear from you - my contact details are above. I look forward to hearing from you.
