An investigation has been launched after a man was found dead on train tracks in Edmonton.

Javier Andres Figueroa-Luccardi, 22, was discovered by a stock train driver who spotted his body lying under the footbridge near Silver Street station.

Earlier, the driver of a southbound Enfield to Liverpool Street train was passing Silver Street at 11.15pm on Thursday when she reported seeing a man fall from the footbridge near Joyce Avenue.

Mr Figueroa-Luccardi, who had just finished his studies, was of Italian descent, but held a Chilean passport. He was single and lived with his family in Edmonton.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "We are still investigating what happened and would like to hear from anyone in the area at the time."

The incident comes after British Transport Police this week announced a sharp rise in violent crime on trains and Tubes.

Violent crime has risen by almost 30 per cent in six years, sexual assaults rose by more than 50 per cent, and attacks on staff have doubled, BTP figures have revealed.

An inquest to determine how Mr Figueroa-Luccardi died has been opened and adjourned.
