Nestled in the heart of a bustling common room lies Southgate College’s best kept secret, but if all goes to plan the college radio station, SG Radio, will not stay secret for long.

Originally launched for second year media students by teacher Steve Cockrell in January 2009, the project has now been rolled out to include the whole college, and with the new appointment of radio controller Jason Young, “the voice of the students”, it’s only going to get bigger and better.

Indeed, next week, a group of enthusiastic volunteers will be heading to the famous Jazz Café in Camden to record, video and photograph a live performance from up-and-coming soul singing sensation Sherry Davis.

Jason says: “The focus is on representing, nurturing and developing talent, with the help and guidance from professionals in the music and media industry.”

Explaining her involvement, Sherry, who lives in Hackney and works for Walthamstow’s Youth Offending Service, explains: “I’m passionate about music as well as working with young people, so it’s great to be able to combine both with the students of Southgate College.”

Speaking to some of the volunteers, it’s clear the station has given them a creative outlet.

Albert Atton, 19, says: “I am studying science but was looking for something different to do. Since I have come here, I have learnt so many things like production, using new equipment, interviewing and because it’s not a classroom, you feel more relaxed, so you can learn more effectively.”

With future plans including news bulletins and programmed slots, Steve tells me: “Something like this is for everyone, so it will be great to see what the students come up with. The students’ voice is what it’s all about.”
