Ponders End gets free "Olympic" gym

AN Olympic gold medallist will open a new free outdoor gym next Thursday in Ponders End.

Marlon Devonish, who was part of the winning 4x100m relay squad in Athens in 2004, will open Adizone, in Ponders End Recreation Ground, a new multi-sport gym open 365 days per year.

Facilities include a basketball, football and tennis area, a climbing wall, an outdoor gym and an area for dance, aerobics and gymnastics The new gym is so-called because it is sponsored and designed by sports company Adidas, while the zones are designed to resemble the Olympic rings from the air.

The recreation ground will also be given a new perimeter jogging path, native species of plants and new cycle stands.

Olympics cabinet member John Kaye said the new gym was creating a ”legacy” that would serve young people in the borough long after the games have finished.

The facilities were built using £75,000, from outsourcing firm Capita, and £78,500 from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).

The five Olympic boroughs, Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham and Waltham Forest, will all receive their own Adizones.

Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Seb Coe said: "It’s fantastic to see Adidas expanding the programme to Enfield.

“The Adizones inspire young people to become more active and help make our vision of encouraging these young people to choose sport a reality."
