AN UP-AND-COMING RnB star from Enfield has narrowly missed out on winning a new community prize for young people.
Matthew Haynes, aka Haynzy, beat hundreds of competitors to make it to the final of the "Spirit of London" awards last Friday.
He was nominated for his ability to "reflect London in a positive light" through his music.
Leona Lewis, Miss Dynamite and Richard Blackwood judged the "achievement through music" category at the star-studded event, which took place at Alexandra Palace, Haringey.
The 21-year-old, who developed his talents through the Enfield Young Disciples Gospel Choir, said: “It was nice to be recognised for all the work I’ve been doing.
"But, most of all, if it can inspire or give hope to any other young people so that they believe in themselves and their dreams, that’s all I can ask for.”
The youngster now writes and records his own material and released his first single, "Fallin’ Alone", with Blue Colla Records in April this year.
He is used to mixing with A-list celebrities after winning the CANDI Music Apprentice of the Year 2009 award.
Since then, he has moved into talent-spotting for Universal Music and working on projects with artists ranging from Girls Aloud to Dame Shirley Bassey.
A spokeswoman for Enfield Council said: "We are very proud of Matthew's achievements.
"The event was the first 'Spirit of London' awards ceremonies so we shall have more chances to nominate in years to come."
Enfield was represented at the event by Councillor Glynis Vince, cabinet member for children's services, and Andrew Fraser, co-director for education, children's services and leisure.
Members of the Youth Engagement Panel and police leaders were also present.
Mea Jenkins, deputy manager of Enfield Arts Support Service, nominated Haynzy for the award. She said: “Mathew has shown that with hard work and motivation young people can follow their ambitions and create a better life.
"We believe that making music transforms lives and are so proud that his success and achievement is being recognised and celebrated."
