THE Lee Valley Regional Park, beloved of Enfield residents for its nature reserve and first class sports facilties, was given an award last week.
The 10,000 acre, 26-mile long Regional Park, is home of the high performance athletics centre in Picketts Lock, Edmonton, used by Olympic double gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu.
The park is also home to 200 different species of birds, including rare breeds wich nest across its marshes and artificially-created wetlands. The park attracts 14 million visitors a year.
For the second time the park was runner up in the 2009 Southern England Excellence Awards, announced at a Park Lane hotel and attended by 50 public, private and voluntary organisations on October 22.
Judges praised the park as a “positive and improvement-focused environment”.
Nigel Foxall, Lee Valley Park’s Head of Performance said: “We are delighted. The Authority is committed to continuous improvement and will incorporate the advice of assessors to ensure that we continue to strive for highest levels of performance.”
The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority will also manage three Olympic venues, the White Water Canoe Centre in Broxbourne, the VeloPark and Eton Manor venues on the Olympic Park after the Games to create “a chain of sporting excellence”.
