Pub raises £8,000 for tsunami orphans in dragon boat race

STAFF at a Cockfosters pub took to the water in a dragon boat race to raise money for charity.

The race was aptly chosen by the fundraisers, as they all work for the Cock & Dragon pub in Chalk Lane, Cockfosters.

The pub’s team was made up of ten game staff members who competed against eight other teams at the charity event on a lake in Hackney on October 20.

The team finished third and raised £8,000 for the Thai Children’s Trust.

The pub's two general managers Denise and Les Strettle both took part.

Mrs Strettle said: “We’re very proud of our team for such a fantastic effort – both on the water and in terms of all the money they raised.

“The event sparked such interest and excitement in the pub and it was a brilliant atmosphere when the team returned after the race for their celebratory pint.”

The race marked the start of the pub's latest charity drive, a campaign to help Thai orphans ahead of the fifth anniversary of the Boxing Day tsunami, as well as disadvantaged children across the UK.

The campaign hopes to raise enough money to fund new play and sports equipment at the Baan Tharn Namchai Orphanage in Khao Lak, Thailand - home to tsunami orphans.

In January 2010, the Cock & Dragon, which is a traditional English pub with a Thai restaurant, will ask customers to bring in unwanted children’s Christmas presents. Half of the collected items will be taken to the Baan Tharn Orphanage with the rest going to UK children’s charity Kids Out.

Mr Strettle added: “It has been a fantastic start to the charity campaign and we’re looking forward to the next push in the New Year.”
