Rare Turkish coins stolen from Enfield pensioner

FOUR rare Turkish coins worth £800 were stolen from the house of an 83-year-old in Upper Edmonton last week.

Three men are believed to have burgled the house at around 3pm last Tuesday after smashing a window to gain entry.

They made off with the four coins, silk scarves and cash.

The coins, worth £200 each, were dated 1923 and had a picture of Ataturk on them, the founder and first president of the Turkish Republic.

The suspects are described as black men in their 20s. One was of medium build, around 5ft 8in tall, and wearing a black jacket with red stripes on the arms.

The second was of slim build, and wearing white trainers, a dark jacket and dark blue bottoms with white stripes down the side.

The third was of large build, and wearing white trainers, a dark long jacket and dark blue bottoms with white stripes down the side.

DC Koulla Panteli, of the Enfield Burglary and Robbery Squad, said: “The victim of this burglary is 83-years-old and it is despicable that anyone should break into her home and take these items, which have such sentimental value.

"I appeal to anyone who has any knowledge of this incident, who may have been offered these coins for purchase or to be sold in their shop, to come forward so they can be returned to her and help us catch those responsible.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call DC Koulla Panteli on 0208 345 4469 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
