Campaigners seeking to raise awareness of the threat of the extreme right are holding a live music event at The Fox in Palmers Green on May 15.

The evening, called Love Music Hate Racism, is organised by Unite Against Facism (UAF), which aims to encourage people to vote in the Europeans Union elections held on June 4.

UAF are concerned that unless higher numbers than expected turn out to vote, the right-wing British National Party (BNP) will gain the two per cent increase of votes it needs to win a seat in the four-yearly elections.

Marty Forsythe, 25, of Wood Green, co-ordinator of UAF in north London, said: "If the BNP wins a seat it will receive around £200,000 in funding and it will have the opportunity to join forces with other fascist parties across Europe."

An active member of UAF, Phil Slaughter, 25, of Wood Green, said: "If we don't do anything, I'd put my money on the BNP getting a seat.

"In 1997 the BNP had no councillors. Today they have 55 and a member in the London Assembly. Who knows where it will end?"

The north London branch of UAF has also set up stalls across Enfield to promote their message. Yesterday was UAF's National Day of Action, during which leaflets were handed out at Tube stations across London.

Mr Slaughter said: "The vast majority of people have been receptive.

They have been pleased that someone is doing something about it."

Mr Forsythe said: "In the recession, people are disillusioned with the major political parties and the BNP are exploiting that. They are blaming the downturn on immigration, but that has nothing to do with it."

The UAF is supported by Jean Lambert MEP, Glynn Ford MEP, Lynne Featherstone MP, Peter Hain MP, and Councillor Andreas Constantinides.

Organisers are hoping that around 200 people will attend the evening.

Artists who are interested in performing are encouraged to register on the UAF website.

The night is free but all donations will be added to the campaign.

Entertainment starts at 8pm at the Fox Public Bar, 413 Green Lanes, Palmers Green, N13 4JD.
