AROUND 4,500 kind-hearted Enfield women donned their running trainers to raise over £350,000 to help the fight against cancer.

They were competing in the Enfield leg of the Race for Life, which took place at Trent Park.

Last month's event was the sixth year it has been run at Trent Park and the 15th year Race for Life has been raising money for Cancer Research.

To date, 3.4 million women have raised over £200million.

It is now the biggest women-only fund-raising event in the UK, with every pound raised in sponsorship going towards furthering Cancer Research's ground-breaking work.

This includes funding the scientists, doctors and nurses who work tirelessly to find new treatments for the disease.

Last year, 665,000 women took part in 280 venues across the UK between May and July.

Cancer Research UK hopes that even more women will take part this year.

Amongst the competitors were 13 family members and friends running in memory of Susan Roper.

Tina O'Driscall ran with her friends and family in memory of her aunt, who died in February having been diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer in January 2007.

The 13 runners ranged widely in age, with the youngest six and nine and the oldest 63.

Tina said that the run was tough on the children, but they still managed to complete the course Tina's own daughter, Lauren, nine, said afterwards: "I was really tired but I just thought about auntie Sue and that made me go on."

The group raised around £1,000 for Cancer Research.

Details have not as yet been specified but a local firm is proposing to match the money they raised.
