Murdered man was on bail for Southgate attack

THE man murdered on Oxford Street on Monday was on bail for an incident in Southgate, in has been revealed today.

Steven Bigby, 22, of Hackney, had hit throat slit in front of horrified shoppers on Oxford Street just before 5pm on Monday.

It is believed that he was killed by a rival gang member in an incident involving a spilled drink.

Since his murder it has been revealed that Mr Bigby was on bail over the brutal gang rape of a 16-year-old girl, with which he was charged along with nine others, in Tottenham last January.

And six months previously he was also charged and bailed on violent disorder grievous bodily harm over the knifing of a 22-year-old man at a snooker club in Southgate, in October 2006.

Mr Bigby was due to stand trial over that incident next month.

Today, 18-year-old Anthony Costa, from Walthamstow, appeared before Waltham Forest Magistrates Court charged with Mr Bigby's murder.

He will remain in custody and is due to appear at the Old Bailey for a plea hearing on August 20.

A 19-year-old man who was also arrested in connection with the murder has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Mr Bigby's murder is the latest in a spate of horrific killings this year, with five in Edmonton alone. And new Mayor of London Boris Johnson is promising to roll out new measures to beat the violence.
