Double delight at Bexley


Bexley Tennis Club was the venue for the North Kent Championships.

Seven titles were up for grabs and although the host club won five of them, there was a fine victory for Monica Beswick and Sally Johnson, from Bromley LTC, in the ladies' veterans decder.

The most exciting match of the day came in the ladies' veterans double final, when Monica Beswick and Sally Johnson, from Bromley LTC, beat Meopham's Yvonne Childs and Liz Hnyniewiez 6-3 3-6 6-1 the only final which went to three sets.

The men's equivalent resulted in a walk-over for Martin Dene's Doug O'Reilly and Wick Wickwiczling, when their opponents from Bromley scratched.

In the men's doubles final, Bexley's Paddy May and Kaan Basaran teamed up to beat Simon Dahdi and Joe Edwards, from the Bromley Wendover Club, 6-3 6-3.

The men's equivalent resulted in a walk-over for Martin Dene's Doug O'Reilly and Wick Wickwiczling, when their opponents from Bromley were forced to scratch.

Meanwhile, the Kent Finals, took place at Sundridge Park LTC.

Results: Ladies: Namita Shah beat Vicky Thomas 7-5 2-6 6-2; Men: Paddy May beat Robert Smith 6-2 6-4; Over-45 men: Bob Whitehead beat Niall Sweeney 6-3,

7-5; Over-35 men: Niall Swweeney beat Dave McSorley 3-6 6-2 6-2; Over 35 ladies: Ladies doubles: Emily Brimson and Carla Skinner beat Sally Holmes and Anne Downes-Powell 6-2 6-3.

Men's doubles: Matt Coxall and Kaan Basaran beat Alisitair Filmer and Andrew Searle 7-6 7-5; Men's over-45 doubles: Niall Sweeney and Bob Whitehead beat Jasper Cooper and Andy Loft 7-5 6-4; Mixed doubles: Carla Skinner and Kaan Basaran beat Emily Brimson and Matt Coxall 6-1 6-3.
