An application to extend a cafe’s opening hours has been refused because the owner has already struggled to tackle noise and anti-social behaviour.
The owner of La Taberna Del Paisa in Tottenham, Pablo Tobon-Pineda, applied to Haringey Council to have the café’s opening hours extended so he could serve more customers.
Mr Tobon-Pineda originally wanted to open until midnight on Monday to Thursday and 3am on Friday to Sunday.
The venue is currently allowed to open until 11pm throughout the week.
But a licensing committee meeting on July 12, the owner agreed to a more modest extension to opening hours recommended by the Metropolitan Police – 11pm on Sunday to Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday.
A landlord who owns a property opposite the venue told the committee his tenants were already struggling to sleep due to loud music and other disturbances from the café.
The licensing committee decided against allowing an extension, citing “credible evidence that the applicant had not adhered to the conditions of his current licence”.
A council statement said: “The applicant could not satisfy the committee that he had implemented sufficient changes in the way he was running his premises so as to satisfy the licensing objectives.
“In particular, the applicant could not demonstrate that he had sufficient measures in place to address the effect of noise and anti-social behaviour/nuisance on local residents.
“The committee had regard to the statement of licensing policy and its wish to promote the local economy of which the premises is a part, but could not treat this application in isolation from the impact that the premises was having on its neighbours.”
