The RAF has flown over the capital en masse with planes that have served the nation for a centenary.

A total of 100 military aircraft flew over London to mark the force’s centenary.

Today, the “epic” flypast was the largest concentration of military aircraft seen over the capital in peacetime.

Formations were seen passing over Buckingham Palace at 1pm and 22 fighter jets were in a "100" formation.

Air Chief Marshal Stephen Hillier, said: “This once-in-a-lifetime flypast will provide an iconic centrepiece for the RAF 100 celebrations.

“In our centenary year, we are commemorating those that have come before us, celebrating our current personnel and, ultimately, inspiring a new generation to write the next chapters in the RAF’s story.

“It is also important to remember that there is a large and multi-skilled team behind every aircraft participating.

“The complex preparations required to deliver this display are made possible by the RAF’s cutting-edge technology and ongoing spirit of relentless innovation.”

The organiser of charity event, V100 Skydive, is looking for willing volunteers who have served in the RAF to jump out a plane in the name of the Royal Air Forces Association.

V100 organiser Donna Cook said: “In this special year for the Royal Air Force I am organising a tandem skydive and am looking for at least 100 RAF veterans who have served as a Regular to undertake this once in a lifetime opportunity.

"The aim is to raise £50,000 for the RAF Association’s welfare projects, Storybook Wings and contact houses.”
