A 16-year-old student has come first place at an art design competition for designing a military inspired jacket.

Holding its final show of the year, Barnet and Southgate College has showed off work by its students.

Barnet and Southgate College principal David Byrne said: “Barnet and Southgate College is extremely proud of all our talented Creative Arts students.

“They have put together an eclectic, inspirational and very professional show.

“This is testament to the dedication and hard work involved in creating their final year projects.

“It has also given the students a chance to shine and be part of a team organising a real life modern art exhibition, which they may even one day host themselves.”

Elia Buafoh, 16, came first place for her Supermarine Spitfire jacket, inspired by the WW2 fighter plane.

The show was held at Wood Street Campus in High Barnet and is still open and free to the public until June 27.

Elia's piece will be on show in the College’s entrance.

Two other contestants also showcased their talent.

John Kolkis, 20, is studying photography and his project focused on loneliness in the city.

He said: “For my final project I created a photographic piece on loneliness within a crowded city.

“I used a technique called layering, where I took 10 to 15 photos on the tube, where people are surrounded by other people, but as an individual you can still feel very lonely.”

Syamini Brathwaite, 18, is studying the College’s art and design foundation diploma.

Syamini moved to London from the USA to study whilst living with family in the UK.

Her final major project is a sculpture based on her ‘idea’ of London, Syamini said: “My 3D piece is based on my idea of London.

“I used design and texture to portray the feeling of claustrophobia that I felt when I first got to London and experienced on the underground system.”
