A Haringey residents’ group will meet with councillors this week to press for action on housing, the living wage and refugees.

Haringey Citizens, a chapter of community organising charity Citizens UK, is hosting an election assembly to allow residents to come together and help improve the lives of poor and disadvantaged households across the borough.

The group will call on the council to redefine ‘affordable housing’ to reflect average incomes, not the market rate; and to bring in a selective licensing scheme to tackle rogue landlords.

It also wants the council to become an accredited living wage employer, to make improvements to Broadwater Farm and to provide more support for Syrian refugees.

Several councillors will be in attendance, including deputy leader of the Labour group Joe Ejiofor and deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat group Liz Morris.

Haringey Citizens is a broad-based alliance of students, vicars, teachers, community workers and residents whose organisations make up the civil society alliance Citizens UK.

Reverend Stephen Poxon, from St Marks Methodist Church, said: “We have planned this assembly in order to highlight the issues that matter most to people living in the borough ahead of the local elections with extremely urgent asks on housing.

“One of the benefits of being a non-political grassroots broad-based network of community leaders at Haringey Citizens means we holistically research and listen to what all corners of our neighbourhoods tell us they need and expect from their elected representatives, which we hope will be accepted by candidates in the spirit we are sharing and put into action with promises.

“With three senior candidates attending from Labour and the Lib Dems, the Assembly provides an opportunity for us to build a working relationship with the future Leader of the council.”

The event will take place at this Thursday (April 26) at the Alevi Cultural Centre on Clarendon Road, Wood Green.
