A man with Type 1 diabetes will be running the London Marathon in under four hours for charity.

Richard Allen, 38, from Cockfosters is running the 26 miles on Sunday, April 22.

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 14, Richard said: “It makes you recognise the need to raise vital funds for people in UK with the condition and to provide the best possible care for the patients through the NHS.

“The training has been very intense and managing my blood glucose levels has been challenging, but I have tried to remain disciplined enough to follow my training plan and also still spend time with the family.”

People with Type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin.

About 10 per cent of people with diabetes have Type 1.

No one knows what causes Type 1 diabetes and it is not currently preventable.

Type 1 diabetes is treated by daily insulin doses, taken either by injections or by an insulin pump.

Richard, a financial director for a company in Epping, is aiming to complete the marathon in under four hours.

The 38 year old is hoping to raise £1,500 for Diabetes UK and has been training with the Trent Park Running Club in Oakwood, Barnet.

Charlotte Harrison-Webb, Diabetes UK Fundraising Manager, said: “We are extremely grateful to Richard for his hard work.

“Running a marathon is no mean feat.

“The money raised will help fund ground-breaking research, care services and campaigns that can change the lives of those living with diabetes.”
