A new open space with employment opportunities has been approved.

Two old industrial site and adjacent land will make way for new homes, retail offices and a public open space.

A public square and walkways connecting east and west Wood Green are to be part of the work replacing the Clarendon Gas Works, Olympia Trading Estate and Western Road land.

Developers St William, which already has planning permission, will now be able to expand their project.

The number of homes and amount of commercial space planned will increase significantly.

Cllr Joe Goldberg, cabinet member for economic development, social inclusion and sustainability, said: “Our vision for Wood Green is to create a prosperous, green and sustainable town centre where residents are proud to live and work.

“This Heartlands site has a vital role to play, offering new homes, and exciting mix of employment space and a vibrant neighbourhood full of life.

“The permission for these ambitious plans is another step towards transforming Wood Green into a thriving and rejuvenated part of Haringey that truly works for our community.”

St William will be investing £25 million in the community through a planning charge to improve facilities and the environment.

Construction jobs and full-time apprenticeships will be made available.

And, there will be an energy centre for Wood Green’s heat network.

Furthermore, the Moselle River could be brought back above ground if water tests are passed.

Nick Raul, from the Haringey Rivers Forum, said: “The Moselle is a river that Haringey should be proud of – it shouldn’t be kept underground.

“We’ve now got a unique opportunity to create a green and blue corridor across the borough, so let’s work together to make it happen.”

Improved walking and cycling routes are also part of the proposals.

John Bryden, senior programmes manager with Thames21, added: “Thames21 believes that restored rivers not only create amazing spaces, but they improve the lives of surrounding communities.

“We are really proud to support the local community in their dialogue with St William and Haringey Council, and delighted that they have agreed to this fantastic project.

“Not only does it help restore one of London’s rivers, it helps to deliver the National Park City goals for London and helps improve Wood Green’s environment for everyone to enjoy.”
