A historic monument in Wood Green is to have a £28,000 facelift.

The Grade II listed Edwardian drinking fountain and cattle trough on the High Road is on Historic England’s Buildings at Risk register.

It was erected in 1901 by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association to make free clean water available to Londoners.

Fountains were often placed outside pubs to promote water-drinking.

Wood Green’s fountain is outside the former Fishmonger’s Arms pub, which is now a police training centre.

Work is due to start in March.

Haringey Council raised funds to repair the fountain in partnership with Historic England, Heritage of London Trust and the Drinking Fountains Association.

Cllr Joe Goldberg, Haringey Council cabinet member for economic development, social inclusion and sustainability, said: “The fountain and cattle trough is an important piece of Wood Green’s social history dating back to the turn of the last century, and it will be great to see this historic monument restored for future generations to enjoy.”

Once restored the water fountain will be switched on for special occasions and demonstrations.
