ENFIELD Police are warning people that with the threat level of terrorist activity at severe they will be using their stop and search powers on a daily basis.

Police stop and search powers under the Terrorism Act 2000 are designed to deter and prevent terrorist activity and create a hostile environment for terrorists, at the same time as providing a visible reassurance to members of the public.

As such, police in Enfield will be using these powers on a daily basis as part of the combined effort in preventing acts of terrorism and atrocities, and making it difficult for terrorists to operate.

A police spokeswoman said: "The Metropolitan Police has a duty to protect London, and although we fully understand that being stopped or searched by police may be inconvenient, the co-operation and patience of the public will assist in the fight against terrorism."

The powers will be utilised in busy areas where people congregate, and places such as roads and side streets near busy pubs, clubs, cinemas, shopping precincts and transport stations.

Acting Borough Commander Simon Thomas said: "Our officers are being urged to use their powers in order to disrupt and prevent further terrorist activity.

"Our community should feel reassured that we are taking the terror threat and their safety extremely seriously.

"We are grateful for the support from the public in the continued fight against terrorism."
