A thrilled college student has won first prize in a tough regional competition aimed at inspiring the pursuit of world-class skills.

Qilong-Li, 23, who finished his studies at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) this term, came top in the IT software solutions for business sub-category of the national qualifiers of an IT and enterprise challenge.

He moves forward to the WorldSkills UK hosted national finals at the Birmingham NEC in November.

WorldSkills UK is Britain’s biggest skills, apprenticeships and careers event.

Qilong, said: “I was surprised but very happy to have won.

“The time was short and it was hard to get everything done.

“My tutors gave me some assignments so I could practice at home, which really helped when I saw what I had to do.

“I have liked everything about my time at CONEL.

“The teachers were good and I learnt a lot of skills I can take to university.”

In October, Qi-long begins a degree programme in Games Design at Middlesex University.

Laila Hassanzadeh, head of school for computing, said: “We’re very proud of Qilong and his success.

“He is an outstanding student who showed excellent commitment and motivation who passed his course with overall distinction.

“He is one of our rising stars and has a bright future ahead of him.”

The regional final took place at North East Surrey College of Technology, Epsom.

Qilong’s success follows that of fellow CONEL student, electrical apprentice Yordan Tomov.

Yordon won the national qualifiers of the construction and infrastructure competition earlier this year.
