A trainee electrician has been named the region's best in his trade in the nation’s most competitive skills, apprenticeship and careers event.

Yordan Tomov, 24, from Edmonton, won gold in the National Qualifiers of the Construction and Infrastructure competition for the south of England.

Yordan’s victory qualifies him to compete in the national finals at Birmingham NEC in November.

Yordan, said: “I couldn’t believe I had won. It took a whole day to sink in.

“The competition was exciting and the pressure was on to complete the project in a limited time, but I felt well prepared and was confident I would finish.”

To achieve the gold standard the three electrical boards and circuits Yordan built in five hours had to excel in the critical eyes of an expert judgment panel from WorldSkills UK.

Of his apprenticeship at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL), Yordan, said: “Every day is different and there are new problems to solve.

“I’ve gained a lot of experience, and grateful to my employer and tutors.

“Having this competition on my CV is a big step and could really give me the edge.”

Derek Munro who is a lecturer in electrical installation at CONEL praised Yordan for his application and determination to improve his skills whilst training.

Mr Munro, said: “He performed brilliantly in the WorldSkills UK competition and I would like to congratulate him on his achievement at reaching the National Finals.”

The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London construction industry apprenticeships include bricklaying, carpentry and joinery plumbing and electrical installation.
